A Taste of Michoacán in the Heart of Sedona

The first thing visitors notice is the color.

Rows of vibrant paletas glow behind the glass: ruby-red strawberry, bright mango, creamy pink fresas con crema and every shade in between. Fresh coffee fills the air. Families gather around display cases debating flavors. Hikers fresh off the trail stop in for something cold and refreshing after a day beneath Sedona’s red rocks.

For Mario Leal, moments like these represent far more than a successful business. They represent home.

Nestled within Sedona Center, La Michoacana Dulce Passion brings the flavors and traditions of Michoacán, Mexico, to one of Arizona’s most visited destinations. The family-owned shop specializes in handcrafted ice cream, paletas, coffee and desserts inspired by the region where Mario and his wife, Laura, were born and raised.

The name itself reflects those roots. La Michoacana translates to “the woman from Michoacán,” a reference to the Mexican state’s rich tradition of transforming fresh fruits into frozen treats. In Mario’s hometown, nearly any fruit can become an ice cream or paleta—a philosophy that continues to guide the family’s menu today

From Dream to Dessert Shop

Although Mario has called Sedona home for nearly 30 years, the road to entrepreneurship took time. He spent decades working in local restaurants, steadily saving money while dreaming of owning a business of his own. Laura studied culinary arts at Yavapai College, and together they originally envisioned opening a restaurant.

When a storefront became available at Sedona Center, however, another idea emerged: sharing the flavors they grew up with through handcrafted frozen desserts.

The timing proved challenging. The family opened La Michoacana Dulce Passion in March 2020, only weeks before pandemic shutdowns temporarily forced them to close. Like many small-business owners, they faced uncertainty from the very beginning. They persevered, and today the shop has become a beloved stop for locals and visitors alike..

Made with Family, Fruit and Tradition

Mario, Laura and their son, Bryan—along with daughters Roxana, Emily, Mariana, and Jazly—remain actively involved in every aspect of the business. Fresh strawberries, mangoes, limes, watermelon and other fruits are transformed into colorful paletas and creamy ice creams made in-house. Among the most popular offerings is the fresas con crema paleta, a strawberries-and-cream creation that perfectly captures the shop’s commitment to traditional Mexican flavors.

The menu also features dairy-free and vegan options alongside tropical fruit paletas and specialty ice creams, ensuring there’s something for nearly every palate.

Visitors arrive from all over the world. During the summer, many escape Phoenix’s intense heat in search of cooler temperatures and a frozen treat. Winter brings travelers from places as far away as Canada and Alaska. No matter where they’re from, the Leal-Calderon family greets them with the same warmth that has helped define the business from day one.

“We are busy all year long,” Mario says with a laugh.

For the family, every scoop and every paleta carries a piece of Michoacán, a sweet reminder that the flavors of home can travel far from where they began.
