Sweet Stop: Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory
There’s a moment that happens to nearly every visitor who steps into the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory at Sedona Center. They walk through the door, stop, and are hit by what owner Lexy Vudrag calls “the wall of chocolate.”
“It’s three candy cases straight in front of you, just loaded with all sorts of chocolate,” she says. “We greet each customer with a friendly hello and some sampling. I want them to feel welcome and take their time. We have so much to offer.”
Vudrag knows this location well. She and her husband have been part of the Rocky Mountain Chocolate family since opening their first franchise in Scottsdale in 2005, taking over the Sedona store as consultants in 2009 and purchasing it outright in 2011.
Where Every Visit Starts with an Apple
While the store is filled with a mouth-watering variety of delicious and decadent treats, the star of the show is undeniably the apple. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory offers around 15 varieties, all built on a from-scratch caramel recipe made in the store’s signature copper kettle—right out front, in full view of customers.
“It’s presentation-style cooking,” Vudrag explains. “When customers walk in, they smell whatever we’re making, and they can look through the picture window and see what’s being made.”
The must-try? The Bear Cub Apple, a caramel apple drizzled with all three chocolates: milk, dark, and white. “Everybody has to walk out with one,” she says proudly..
Beyond apples, the shop carries what Vudrag calls mountain-sized chocolates: larger pieces than anything you’ll find at a competitor, and exclusive to Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Top sellers include English toffee; peanut butter cups in milk, dark, and white chocolate; and the beloved pecan bear, the store’s riff on a chocolate turtle, made with creamy caramel and your choice of pecans, almonds, or cashews.
Sweet on the Latest Trend
Vudrag keeps a close eye on what’s happening in the wider food world and brings those trends into the shop. This summer, she’s reintroducing a fan favorite: pistachio bites made with Dutch chocolate, her take on the viral Dubai chocolate trend.
“Instead of doing the bars, we reinvented them to be pistachio bites—a smaller piece, but they’re selling like wildfire,” she says.
A Destination for Every Sweet Tooth
The customer base is almost entirely tourist-driven, with visitors from across the country and around the world. A common reaction when people walk in? “Oh my gosh, they have one of these in our mall. Let’s go in!”
The familiarity of the brand is a draw, but what keeps people lingering is the experience itself. For the holidays, Easter is the shop’s sweet spot. Literally. March is one of Sedona’s two busiest months, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory leans in with bunnies, jellybeans, eggs, and everything a great Easter basket needs.
At the end of the day, Vudrag’s goal is simple. “I want them to walk out feeling pleased with themselves, pleased with their purchase, and happy,” she says. “Who isn’t happy when they walk into a chocolate store?”
